Caravans - moisture is the enemy

At this time of year, many of us are returning from or planning our next caravan trip. As a caravan enthusiast myself, I thought it a good time to share some tips on how to protect your caravan or motorhome from the often overlooked threat of moisture.

Water leaks, condensation and general dampness can build up on the inside of your caravan especially during winter or summers humid months. It doesn’t take long before mattresses, furnishings, curtains etc get that horrible musty smell followed by unsightly and harmful mould. If moisture is left untreated it can lead to more serious issues resulting in rot and property loss. The most effective and efficient way to stop this is by using an NWT Dehumidifier from Ausclimate.

After returning home from a trip away or before you put your caravan in storage its good practice to dry everything out. It’s amazing how much moisture is absorbed from wet weather, cooking and general everyday use. You should run your Dehumidifier inside the van for around a day or so and then again every few weeks (this can vary depending on the weather and size of Dehumidifier). This will maintain the dryness required to stop any mould or musty smells from returning - protecting the inside of your caravan.

For good air circulation you should prop up your cushions and ensure all mattresses have adequate space for airflow. All internal doors, cupboards and draws should be left open and make sure you clean out the fridge freezer before leaving its door open. If you are unfortunate enough to experience a serious water leak, ensure you dry it out immediately with a Dehumidifier. Ausclimate’s Dehumidifiers are often used in the water damage industry; our models are capable of drying your caravan out to its original condition.

Water leaks, mould or musty smells can have a dramatic effect on the value and longevity of your caravan. Look after your valuable asset by keeping it dry. And as always, if you’re experiencing any similar issues, please feel free to contact Russell or myself for expert advice and custom solutions for all of your moisture problems.
