Dehumidifiers for Apartment-Living

Dehumidifiers-For-Apartment-Living-(header)

A guide to the issues of excess moisture in the home & how to deal with it

These days, many of us live in smaller homes, apartments, town-houses and generally compact living situations. While living in these close quarters we rarely think about how everyday moisture can be adversely affecting us. Does your home smell musty when you get home after being closed up through the day? Do mould, condensation, pests or forever-drying washing sound familiar? Well, you may have a moisture-problem, but thankfully we have a solution!

Moisture comes from many places in the home, from showers to washing the dishes to laundry-drying to our very own bodies. It's everywhere! And without a proper place for it to escape (i.e. good natural ventilation or exhaust fans) it can lead to dangerous consequences like mould growth.

In fact, many homes these days (especially some of the older ones that are prevalent in Australia) have limited natural ventilation and common wall fixtures/insulations that can actually keep the moisture in rather than letting it out. Many of us also lack clothes drying machines (causing us to dry our clothes indoors) and lack effective exhaust fans, resulting in excess moisture that has nowhere to go!

Dee Carter, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Sydney, notes that mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated environments. "I think any amount of visible mould is not a good thing. ...Depending on the environment you live in, you could find it growing on your carpet, on your curtains, or in the ceiling tiles. Any substrate really can be a home to mould if there's enough moisture."

It's well-documented by industry experts that being around mould, mould-spores and dust-mites on an ongoing basis can be very bad for your health. From sleep problems and general restlessness/fatigue to allergy and asthma flare-ups and assorted respiratory issues to even more severe ongoing mould-related health issues; mould is definitely not something we want to be around!

Professor Carter explains that certain species of mould, such as Penicillium, Aspergillus and Cladosporium, can be a particular problem indoors. "These ones can produce a lot of spores and the spores can produce allergies and inflammation. ...They can be inhaled and can cause lung diseases if they get a bit too invasive."

Thankfully, a high-quality dehumidifier can be a great solution to reducing moisture levels in these tricky environments. An Ausclimate dehumidifier will actively reduce these moisture levels and keep them down through ongoing maintenance use. They can remove anywhere from 7 litres all the way up to 50 litres of moisture from your home per day!

Ausclimate's dehumidifiers will reduce/eliminate:
• excess indoor moisture levels & condensation
• mould & mildew (existing mould will need to be safely removed - a dehumidifier will prevent it from coming back!)
• musty smells
• forever-drying washing (simply put your washing on a clothes-horse next to your dehumidifier & it will dry that washing for you!)
• pests (cockroaches, ants & other insects thrive in high humidity levels)
• health risks (mould spores & dust mites are common triggers for asthma, allergies & other serious respiratory issues)

A wide range of leading health experts approve & recommend our products. This array of health field professionals includes Allergy Specialists, Doctors, Pharmacists, Naturopaths, Building Biologists and the Australian National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice programme. Most importantly though, they are recommended by you. Our dehumidifiers are currently rated #1 on Australia’s leading independent consumer product review website: ProductReview.com.au

I recently got the opportunity to stop by one of our great Brisbane region Ausclimate retailers, Aqua Gardening in Stafford. Store Manager, Chris (pictured) and his team do a great job and keep an amazing-looking store as you can see for yourself!

While Aqua Gardening is a great place for you to get your Ausclimate dehumidifiers and air-purifiers for any purpose, they are quite unique in being able to offer great, expert advice on using them in conjunction with indoor gardening, water-gardening, 'hydroponics' and 'aquaponics'. Dehumidifiers and air-purifiers can be quite important for indoor horticulturists from beginners and hobbyists, right up to advanced levels and high-tech grow rooms.

As Chris has told us, dehumidifiers can be very important in this field to maintain specific humidity levels for indoor gardening/agricultural applications and grow rooms. Air-purifiers, on the other hand, can be great to control indoor gardening odours and pollination, in addition to helping to neutralize airborne VOCs, chemicals and germs. Interesting stuff indeed!

If you are in the area, please stop by and take a look for yourself. We are proud to say that the friendly Aqua Gardening team shares our mission to offer the best advice and customer service in the market.

Again, we were just wowed by the showroom and variety of indoor gardening methods on display. It was just great to see so many healthy plants - I was especially impressed by their cauliflowers! As an old-time vegetable grower myself, I was amazed by the insect-free environment, as well as the size, colour and overall level of healthy vibrancy. Just amazing to see how cauliflowers and a wide range of herbs and vegetables can grow so well indoors. Great job guys.

Thank you Aqua Gardening!

Allergy Season Air Purifier Tips & July Specials

Ausclimate Allergy Season

As July comes to a close, many of us know all too well that the allergy season is right around the corner! For many people, our Winix air-purifiers have been a great source of much-needed relief, as seen in their own words over at ProductReview.com.au So we decided to put together a few handy hints on how to get the most out of your air purifiers when it comes to those allergies.

A reminder that as July comes to an end, so do our 'July Specials'. We've got some great deals on right now across our full Asthma Council Australia Sensitive Choice-approved air-purifier & dehumidifier range which just won't last much longer. So if you've been thinking about a purchase, now is a great time!

Allergy Season Winix Air Purifier Tips

For those allergy & hay fever sufferers of us, Ausclimate's Winix air-purifiers can do an excellent job of reducing common allergens in the home like dust, dust mites, pet dander & pollens, thereby helping out big time in the fight against allergy flare-ups.

To get the most out of your air-purifier for this use, we recommend running your unit on 'medium' in your bedroom while you sleep. Medium Fan speed is great to capture these allergens, while still nice & quiet for a good night's sleep. We also have a dedicated 'sleep mode' if you want it even quieter!

As mentioned in our Air Purifier Cleaning Guide post, we also recommend regular cleaning maintenance of your unit as well as replacing your filter when the time comes to really keep your machine performing at its best when it comes to capturing those allergens!

If you work in a workspace where it is convenient, we also find that running your air-purifier through the day while you work can do a great job of keeping those allergies at bay! Some have even said that they feel improved productivity through the workday with the cleaner air.

Quick Tips:
• Medium fan speed in the bedroom while sleeping
• Regular cleaning
• Replacing your filter when required
• Run in your workplace where practicable

Dry that Cold, Damp Bathroom with your Dehumidifier!

Bathroom-Drying

Desiccant Dehumidifier Bathroom Drying Guide & Tips

This rather chilly time of year can be tough for many, especially those of us in Australia's cooler-climate areas like Southern New South Wales, rural Victoria, Melbourne, Hobart & Adelaide to name a few. During the winter season, the idea of taking a shower in this cold, damp weather can be especially dreadful! It's times like this where your Ausclimate Dehumidifier can be your best friend to dry that cold-damp bathroom moisture right out of there & really take the chill off!

Throughout the year, our bathrooms can prove a terrible spot for the accumulation of moisture and condensation, often resulting in musty smells and even mould. If you don't have a good amount of natural ventilation or a bathroom exhaust fan, this can fast become a problem. With no other place to go, the steam & moisture from our showers can go straight into our wall and roof fixtures with nasty results! This can become especially evident in these colder, damp winter months.

Rest assured, this can be the perfect job for your Ausclimate Cool-Seasons Desiccant Dehumidifier! These units are purpose-designed for cooler climate use and will actively suck the moisture right out of your bathroom air after your shower. This will remove condensation from your mirrors, windows & wall and even dry your towel afterwards. Regular use will leave your bathroom fresh & dry, no more musty smells, mould & condensation!

As an added bonus, try turning it on 10-15 minutes before your shower when you have your 'morning cuppa' to really take some of the chill off of the room.

Quick Tips:
• Turn your desiccant dehumidifier on 10 - 15 mins before your shower (good time for a cuppa )
• Set it to 'Laundry Mode', 'Turbo' fan speed (best setting for winter time during these cold chilly mornings)
• Continue to operate whilst in shower & leave running for approximately 30 mins after your shower

As always, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about this guide or would like to find out more about our dehumidifiers. 1800 122 100 (free call)

Ausclimate Air Purifier Cleaning Guide – it’s so easy

Dirty-Filter

One of the most important points in keeping your WINIX Air Purifier running at is best is maintenance cleaning & regular filter replacement. We often get asked about this in person, so we thought that we’d put together an easy-to-use air purifier cleaning guide to help you get the most out of your machine over the long haul!

Preface: Always remember to pay special attention to your replacement filter indicator. Through regular use, your filter should last you for about a years time. Once this time is up and your replacement filter indicator light comes on, it is very important to replace your filter for effective ongoing air purification. For more check out our replacement filter post here.

These replacement filters are available (with free delivery) on our website page.

1

Maintenance Cleaning of your Winix Air Purifier

Every week or two, we recommend giving your air purifier a good clean for maximum effectiveness. It is essential that you regularly check and clean your pre-filter, as below.

2

Step 1: Remove the outer casing of your air-purifier

3

4

Step 2: Remove the filter cartridge from within the air-purifier

5

6

Step 3: Give the fan vents on top and inside of the air-purifier a wipe with a damp cloth to remove any dirt/dust build up

7

Step 4: Unclip the ‘Pre-Filter’ from your filter cartridge pack

8

11

Step 5: Give the ‘Pre-Filter’ a good clean with your vacuum (or every now & then give it a wash with clean water)

9

10

Step 6: Vacuum the dust sensors and interior fan vents to remove any excess dust

12

13

Step 7: Clip your ‘pre-filter’ back into place in your filter cartridge pack & then return into the machine, just as it was when you first removed it.
*If you have cleaned your pre-filter with water, make sure to dry it completely before putting it back into the machine

Special notes:
• The above guide is intended for Ausclimate’s WINIX Ultimate 5-Stage Air Purifier
• For Ausclimate's WINIX 4-Stage Air-Purifiers, regular cleaning of the pre-filter is even easier because it is not actually attached to the other filters. Just remove as above, quick clean and return to the machine. It’s that easy.
• For both models, never clean or submerge your HEPA filter in water, only the pre-filter!

If in doubt, please refer to your user manual or get in touch with the Ausclimate team if unsure about anything:

When it's time to replace your filter

Replace-Filter-Indicator

One of the questions that we often get is "How often do I need to replace my air purifier filters?"

As most of you may already know, our Winix Air Purifiers come with their first filter ready to go. In cases of non-stop use, this should last you about 1 year before needing to be replaced. If you are using it less than this, it can last significantly longer! One of the easiest ways to tell if the time has come is the 'replacement filter indicator' as you can see in red in this picture. If this shows up for you, it's time to get your next filter.

Now if it has still not shown up by 18 months, our health experts recommend replacing it anyway at this time due to the nature of the pollutants that the air purifier has captured.

When the time has come, you can easily purchase your next filter designed just for your machine (with free delivery) by either giving us a call or purchasing on our website page.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions at all.

P.S. We'll have a great little guide coming your way soon on how to regularly clean your filters to make sure that you are really getting the best out of them.

Dry that Wet Weather Washing with your Dehumidifier

Rainy-Weather
Dry-Your-Laundry-In-The-Damp-Weather

With all of the rain that we've been getting in the last few days, drying that laundry can prove quite the challenge. It's times like this when your Ausclimate dehumidifier can be your best friend!

Whether one of our NWT compressor dehumidifiers or one of our Ausclimate Cool-Seasons dehumidifiers, simply set your dehumidifier up in a small, closed off room with your wet washing on a clothes horse and let it do it's magic. It will suck the moisture right out of those clothes and is actually more economical than your standard clothes-dryer.

As an added tip, do your best to make sure that the room is closed off (i.e. closed windows and doors) and empty your dehumidifier tank as required. Such a relief to finally get some dry washing on these damp and dreary days!

Winix Hospital Grade True HEPA Filtration

Hospital Grade HEPA

So just what is Hospital-Grade True HEPA Filtration?

Ausclimate’s Winix range are specifically designed for Australia, giving you the unique combination of superior 'PlasmaWave' air-purification technology and certified H13 Hospital-grade true HEPA filtration. This industry-leading technology & filtration standard effectively remove a broad range of odours, allergens & other airborne pollutants including; dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander, mould, bacteria, viruses and VOCs.

Why is Hospital Grade HEPA so important?

Ausclimate’s Winix air purifier range is certified as meeting the True HEPA Filter H13 certification - Australian Standard (AS 4260-1997)¹. This means that they have a confirmed H13 level of purification, removing 99.97% (minimum efficiency) of airborne pollutants such as viruses, bacteria & allergens as small as 0.3 microns (0.3 microns is far smaller than dust, dust mites, mould spores, pollens, bacteria and even pet dander!). This is the industry standard that defines whether an air purifier is suitable for use in hospital environments and medical applications including; clean-rooms, pharmaceutical manufacturing and any environment where clean/sterile conditions are required.

Not all HEPA filters are equal

The unfortunate truth is that many suppliers make the claim of having 'HEPA filters', however, some of these are in reality not actually 'H13 Hospital-grade true HEPA' filtration and upon testing, fail to filter 99.97% at 0.3 microns of particles from the air. As a responsible Australian supplier of quality air purifiers, proof of independent testing is very important to us, as it should be for all customers doing their research.

Ausclimate's Winix air purifier range proudly meets the Australian Standards, European Standards, as well as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Standards and have the proof to back it up.¹

Surpassing Australian HEPA Filter Standards

While Ausclimate's Winix air purifier range meets these industry standards, in some ways our range actually surpasses them. Independent Australian tests¹ performed by Assured Equipment Services showed that at 0.3 microns, our filters actually surpassed the required efficiency level of 99.97%. Then as we get below the 99.97% efficiency rating, the filters can actually capture pollutants much smaller than the required 0.3 micron Standard (i.e. smoke and other tiny particles).

¹ H13 True Hepa filtration standard accredited by Australian independent testing laboratory, Assured Equipment Services, Utah-based Nelson Laboratories and Yonsei University, based in Seoul, South Korea. Test report results available upon request.
