It's that time of year where we often find the washing taking FOREVER to dry & for apartment-dwellers, this can be especially frustrating. Mould & Dust Mites In Our Bedrooms

ABC Pillow Mould
(image courtesy of ABC Life - original article available here)

We've found an excellent article from the ABC about the dangers of mould & dust mites in our mattresses and pillows and how often you should be replacing them to avoid it! It gives some really great insight on the topic from some excellent industry professionals.

How often should you change your mattress and pillows to avoid mould and dust mites?

As we know, a top-quality Dehumidifier can be just a fantastic solution to really dry out that mattress and pillows. This helps stop those mould & dust mite nasties in their tracks and even extends the life of your mattress and pillows. We put together a handy Bedroom Mattress Dehumidifier Drying Guide for this a little while back that gives some excellent tips! You can check it out here:

Ausclimate Bedroom Mattress Dehumidifier Drying Guide

In addition to a dehumidifier, a top-quality air purifier will also do an excellent job of actively ridding the air in your bedroom of these airborne nasties (i.e. mould spores, dust mites and dust mite faeces). Find out all about it on the website: http://www.winixaustralia.com.au

We also did a great little Healthy Home Moment video here with Nicole Bijlsma with some excellent tips about reducing those bedroom allergens:

Crazy Wagga Wagga Dust Storms

Crazy-Wagga-Dust-Storms

Yesterday we experienced a big dust storm in Wagga Wagga that turned the sky orange! January proved the dustiest on record and according to weather experts, this 'dusty season' is far from over.

Thank-Goodness

We find the Winix Zero 4 Stage Air Purifier so energy efficient that we keep it running all day. Well, thank goodness we did in this crazy dust storm, as thankfully we didn't end up with a spec of dust in the room!

These dust storms can be just terrible for people with dust allergies and respiratory issues, so it's great to know just how effectively the Winix air purifier kept that dust at bay. A great tip to all of our air purifier owners out there to keep your units running during this dusty season!

A Dehumidifier for Soap Making?

Soap-Making-Dehumidification

We're always very excited to hear of new and interesting uses for our dehumidifiers and today we got a great one!

Linda Lasker of Lather With Linda is using our highly-rated NWT Medium 20L Dehumidifier during the curing process of her wonderful handmade natural Castile soaps. Linda uses our dehumidifier to keep the room humidity levels low while her soaps are curing. Linda tells us that this can reduce the overall curing time by approximately two weeks in our humid Queensland climate. How interesting!

Thank you for letting us know about this Linda, great stuff! If anyone else out there has an interesting use for our dehumidifiers or air purifiers, please tell us all about it.

If you're in the greater Brisbane area, make sure to take a look at Linda's "Lather With Linda" Facebook page. She does a great job. Lovely to see someone following their passion. We are happy to hear that Linda's soaps are mild and gentle, (with no chemicals or artificial agents) great for those with skin sensitivities and also great for pets!

Made with extra virgin olive oil and drizzle of extra virgin coconut oil to give lather and longevity and a dash of raw honey (harvested locally). Unscented, Lavender pure essential oil bars and Lemon pure essential oil bars. Extremely good value and eco-friendly, biodegradable and great for those who enjoy camping and the outdoors. Linda is based in the Jindalee, QLD area and her products are available to pick up by appointment.

Thanks again Linda and a very happy new year to all of our Ausclimate friends out there!

indoor water-damage dehumidifier drying guide

StayDrySydney

Sydney has copped a serious amount of rain today with flooding in many areas. It can be heartbreaking for anyone to wake up to some form of flooding, even smaller amounts of water damage in your home can really get you down. If you've experienced non-major water damage to floors, carpet or even in your car then we're happy to offer some handy tips to dry it right out.

IndoorWaterDamage DehumidifierDryingGuide

Indoor Water-Damage Dehumidifier Drying Guide

A quality dehumidifier is an excellent aid in actively removing moisture from a room (up to 50 litres per day). Dehumidifiers are especially great at drying deep, embedded moisture. For example, in addition to being excellent at drying carpets, if you have water-logged wooden floors or skirting boards, a dehumidifier can pull that moisture right out of the wood.

Here are some handy tips to dry those damp or water-logged areas most effectively with your dehumidifier.

Timing: Time can be of the essence in these situations, as mould can start to grow within 48 to 72 hours in moist or water-logged materials. So try to act as fast as possible, (while keeping safe).

Quick Tips:
1. Use towels to soak up any excess water. If the carpet is damp, then fold the towel over a few times and stand on it to draw the water up (preferably use a white towel as you don’t want the dye from a new coloured towel to 'bleed' into the carpet). Keep doing this until you can't get any more water out. You will be surprised even how dry the top of the carpet feels after doing this.

2. Place your dehumidifier into the room, close all windows and doors and turn the dehumidifier on to the lowest humidity setting (30% is preferable). If you have any fans, make sure to turn these on too. Air circulating in the room with the dehumidifier running will speed up the drying process.

3. Depending on the situation, it may take anywhere from 24 hours to a matter of days running your dehumidifier continuously to dry everything properly. (Remember to keep your doors and windows closed during this drying process.)

Important note: this guide is intended for minor water damage only, (not major flooding). If in doubt call a professional.

Dehumidifiers for Apartment-Living

Dehumidifiers-For-Apartment-Living-(header)

A guide to the issues of excess moisture in the home & how to deal with it

These days, many of us live in smaller homes, apartments, town-houses and generally compact living situations. While living in these close quarters we rarely think about how everyday moisture can be adversely affecting us. Does your home smell musty when you get home after being closed up through the day? Do mould, condensation, pests or forever-drying washing sound familiar? Well, you may have a moisture-problem, but thankfully we have a solution!

Moisture comes from many places in the home, from showers to washing the dishes to laundry-drying to our very own bodies. It's everywhere! And without a proper place for it to escape (i.e. good natural ventilation or exhaust fans) it can lead to dangerous consequences like mould growth.

In fact, many homes these days (especially some of the older ones that are prevalent in Australia) have limited natural ventilation and common wall fixtures/insulations that can actually keep the moisture in rather than letting it out. Many of us also lack clothes drying machines (causing us to dry our clothes indoors) and lack effective exhaust fans, resulting in excess moisture that has nowhere to go!

Dee Carter, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Sydney, notes that mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated environments. "I think any amount of visible mould is not a good thing. ...Depending on the environment you live in, you could find it growing on your carpet, on your curtains, or in the ceiling tiles. Any substrate really can be a home to mould if there's enough moisture."

It's well-documented by industry experts that being around mould, mould-spores and dust-mites on an ongoing basis can be very bad for your health. From sleep problems and general restlessness/fatigue to allergy and asthma flare-ups and assorted respiratory issues to even more severe ongoing mould-related health issues; mould is definitely not something we want to be around!

Professor Carter explains that certain species of mould, such as Penicillium, Aspergillus and Cladosporium, can be a particular problem indoors. "These ones can produce a lot of spores and the spores can produce allergies and inflammation. ...They can be inhaled and can cause lung diseases if they get a bit too invasive."

Thankfully, a high-quality dehumidifier can be a great solution to reducing moisture levels in these tricky environments. An Ausclimate dehumidifier will actively reduce these moisture levels and keep them down through ongoing maintenance use. They can remove anywhere from 7 litres all the way up to 50 litres of moisture from your home per day!

Ausclimate's dehumidifiers will reduce/eliminate:
• excess indoor moisture levels & condensation
• mould & mildew (existing mould will need to be safely removed - a dehumidifier will prevent it from coming back!)
• musty smells
• forever-drying washing (simply put your washing on a clothes-horse next to your dehumidifier & it will dry that washing for you!)
• pests (cockroaches, ants & other insects thrive in high humidity levels)
• health risks (mould spores & dust mites are common triggers for asthma, allergies & other serious respiratory issues)

A wide range of leading health experts approve & recommend our products. This array of health field professionals includes Allergy Specialists, Doctors, Pharmacists, Naturopaths, Building Biologists and the Australian National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice programme. Most importantly though, they are recommended by you. Our dehumidifiers are currently rated #1 on Australia’s leading independent consumer product review website: ProductReview.com.au

Please visit the rest of our website to find out more and if you have any questions, just give us a call. We’ll happily discuss your individual needs and circumstances, helping you to find the right solution for cleaner and healthier air in your home.

I recently got the opportunity to stop by one of our great Brisbane region Ausclimate retailers, Aqua Gardening in Stafford. Store Manager, Chris (pictured) and his team do a great job and keep an amazing-looking store as you can see for yourself!

While Aqua Gardening is a great place for you to get your Ausclimate dehumidifiers and air-purifiers for any purpose, they are quite unique in being able to offer great, expert advice on using them in conjunction with indoor gardening, water-gardening, 'hydroponics' and 'aquaponics'. Dehumidifiers and air-purifiers can be quite important for indoor horticulturists from beginners and hobbyists, right up to advanced levels and high-tech grow rooms.

As Chris has told us, dehumidifiers can be very important in this field to maintain specific humidity levels for indoor gardening/agricultural applications and grow rooms. Air-purifiers, on the other hand, can be great to control indoor gardening odours and pollination, in addition to helping to neutralize airborne VOCs, chemicals and germs. Interesting stuff indeed!

If you are in the area, please stop by and take a look for yourself. We are proud to say that the friendly Aqua Gardening team shares our mission to offer the best advice and customer service in the market.

Again, we were just wowed by the showroom and variety of indoor gardening methods on display. It was just great to see so many healthy plants - I was especially impressed by their cauliflowers! As an old-time vegetable grower myself, I was amazed by the insect-free environment, as well as the size, colour and overall level of healthy vibrancy. Just amazing to see how cauliflowers and a wide range of herbs and vegetables can grow so well indoors. Great job guys.

Thank you Aqua Gardening!
